From September 15 to 18, ‘Tokyo Game Show 2016’ was opened at Makuhari Messe, Chiba ken, Japan.

Celebrating the 20th anniversary this year, ‘Tokyo Game Show 2016,’ the show that represents Japan, is co-hosted by Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA) and Nikkei BP, and specially cooperated with DWANGO. The event is organized into a business-day on September 15 and 16, when only game business people and mass communication officials can enter, and a public-day on September 17 and 18, when all the visitors can enter.

Before the opening of ‘Tokyo Game Show 2016,’ Bandai Namco Entertainment (BNEI) progressed a presentation event ‘2016 Pre-TGS Press Tour,’ which introduces the new titles from its office located in Tokyo. In this event, it presented the major titles facing releases from BNEI and explained their features.

Through this presentation, ‘Little Nightmares’ session was progressed. Dave Mervik, Story Designer of Tasier Studios, and Arno Stabler from Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe were presenters for the session.

‘Little Nightmares’ is a puzzle-type adventure game that is being developed in Tasier Studios. In the game, the main character with yellow raincoat solves puzzles by using various tools or actions and travels all around the underwater facility. The characters, objects and of course the background in the game are displayed in distorted appearance like ‘doll’s house.’ This is because the fear felt from a child’s point of view is expressed in the strange figures.

However, unlike other horror games, rather than directly showing gore scenes when dangerous element attack the character, ‘Little Nightmares’ makes users ‘imagine’ those scenes through sound and etc. Mervik said, “Rather than realizing bloody horror game, I wanted to make users feel the ‘sense’ of fear, so the genre of the game is marked as ‘suspense adventure.’”

Also, through ‘not giving the answer’ game play, users cannot know the result before converting ideas into action, and they need to check what things are hidden one by one by exploring the world in the game. The game is organized to concentrate on the situation where the game is going on.

At the same time, instead of removing characters’ dialogues, the proportion of noise sound effects is increased so that the mood of the game will be created dramatically, and this element is continued from ‘City of Metronome,’ which is a game that Tasier Studios had been developing. About it, Mervik said, “Due to the feature of no dialogue, much more time was spent on the game design than I thought.”

‘Little Nightmares’ can be played in PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC platform. Also, in 2017, it will be subtitled in Korean and released in download mode.
