On Wednesday 6 October, media representatives are invited to join a virtual visit to the Airbus cleanroom for the delivery of the European Service Module ESM-2 and to see ESM-3, both key parts of Europe’s contribution to the Artemis missions to the Moon.

Orion is NASA’s next exploration spacecraft to send humans into space. It is designed to send astronauts farther into space than ever before, beyond the Moon to asteroids and even Mars.

ESA has contracted and is overseeing the development of the European Service Module, the part of the Orion spacecraft that provides air, electricity and propulsion. Much like a train engine pulls passenger carriages and supplies power, the European Service Module will power the Orion Crew Module to its destination and back to Earth.

During the virtual visit you will be able to see the European Service Modules ESM-2, which will be ready for dispatch to NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre, and ESM-3, which is in progress for completion in late 2022.

The first module, ESM-1, is fully integrated with the Orion capsule and now in final preparations for its launch on Artemis I, the uncrewed first lunar mission. The second Artemis mission, with ESM-2, will take up to four astronauts on a flyby around the Moon and ESM-3 will take the first humans to land on the Moon since December 1972.

Programme of wednesday 6th October:
11:00 Start of programme with short introduction of the speakers
11:15 Q&A
11:45 End of programme

Afterwards, a recording will be uploaded on ESA web TV:
