UNDP and China to Collaborate on Innovation and Technology Sharing

BEIJING, Dec. 11, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced today that it entered a global partnership with China's Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) aimed at strengthening innovation for development, promoting technology transfer and knowledge sharing across the Belt and Road countries to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Today at the Diaoyutai State Guest House, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by Prof. Wan Gang, Minister of MOST and Achim Steiner, Administrator of UNDP during his visit to China from 9 to 11 December.

China has become a global leader of driving innovation and technology for its development. This MOU between UNDP and China seeks to share China's best practices of innovation, such as fuel cell technology, through South-South Cooperation (SSC) and the Belt and Road Initiative.

The strengthened partnership will focus on enhancing knowledge and technology exchange between China and other developing countries through South-South cooperation, promoting progress towards the SDGs. The two parties will work together to match the technologies of China with the challenges of other developing countries are facing in achieving sustainable development and facilitate technology transfer.

"UNDP's global network, field presence and understanding of local contexts can support China in scaling up its innovative interventions and share China's policy and successful experience in innovation with other developing countries," he added.

The collaboration is in line with UNDP's newly launched Global Strategic Plan, which highlights strengthening partnerships, increasing information sharing, and facilitating technology exchanges to meet sustainable development needs in an ever-changing world.
