In the morning of the 30th of May, ARM held a press conference at Taipei International Convention Center(TICC) in Taipei, Taiwan.

Having ahead ‘Computex Taipei 2016,’ which is a computer industry specialized exhibition of Taiwan and starts from the 31th, the event was designed for which role ARM will take in the computing environment and what new technology will be presented through the exhibition. ARM officials, such as executive vice president and CSO, Rene Haas, and marketing and strategy vice president, Nandan Nayampally, attended the event.

▲ The press conference of ARM was held at Taipei International Convention Center.

▲ At the event, various products that used ARM’s technology are exhibited.

As the first order, Rene Haas introduced about the present condition of ARM technology and the focus areas for the future.

Among 25 trillion ARM-based chips having been shipped for the last two years, Haas presented that 5.5 trillion ARM-based embedded chips are shipped in 2015, and technologies of ARM are being used for more than 5 trillion mobile phones all over the world. Also, he emphasized that ‘Mali’ is the most shipped GPU around the world.

He said that a smartphone became the best computing device that provides various functions to people, and behind that, 3 trillion smartphones where ARM-based technology is used play a big role. At the same time, he called a smartphone ‘the door to future innovation’ and said that a smartphone became the most important device even for machine running, computer vision, full-time support digital assistance, IoT, including smart home, virtual reality and augmented reality.

Meanwhile, as smartphone’s major functions that ARM chip plays a large part, AAA class gaming, full 4K video and image, and augmented reality are mentioned.

Firstly, in case of virtual reality, a high frame with 120FPS, high resolution with 4K, low latency, etc. are required, and especially, the function of CPU has to be strengthened for the more realistic 3D sound. Next, in case of ‘AAA gaming,’ a consistent frame rate, resolution with 2.5K~4K, etc. are required, and the ability of CPU has to be improved to make each pixel look more realistic.

In case of full 4K video and image, GPU and CPU will take significant roles in reflecting real-time effect and taking ‘the best scene.’ In case of augmented reality, as well as GPU being used in image recognition, a better technology will be applied at recent image processing techniques that shows screen on glass.

Haas stressed, “Consumers are expecting strong user experience over all the devices,” and “ARM-based technology is already used in more than 90% of home UHD systems and 90% of infotainment product for automobiles. Apart from this, ARM-based SoC(System on Chip) in various fields will meet consumers’ expectations.”

▲ It is expected to take a big part in viral reality, AAA gaming, augmented reality, etc.

Nandan Nayampally came on stage to introduce new products that will provide stronger user experience.

Nayampally firstly introduced the next generation GPU, ‘Mali-G71.’

‘Mali-G71’ is designed on the base of ARM’s 3rd generation GPU architecture, Bifrost, which is built on renovation technique of Utgard and Midgard architecture. Its feature is that it is optimized to Vulkan and other industries-standard API. In addition, when compared to the existing product, graphical performance, power efficiency and performance per unit area are improved 50%, 20% and 40% respectively.

‘Mali-G71’ can extend to maximum 32 shader cores, twice as much as the existing premium GPU ‘Mali-T880.’ Moreover, through consistency of two-way cache, software development is simplified and its efficiency is increased.

Next, a premium CPU ‘Cortex-A73’ is introduced.

‘Cortex-A73,’ which has less than 0.65mm2 of area per core in 10nm FinFET technologies, is the smallest and the most effective high-performance ARMv8-A core. This product has a feature of 30% improved sustainability performance and power efficiency compared to ‘Cortex-A72.’

Due to improvements of the size and efficiency, chipmakers can make more developed product in case of configuring ARM big.LITTLE with ‘Cortex-A73,’ and developers can variously extend or reduce high-performance core with GPU in a single SoC as well as other IPs.

▲ 'Cortex-A73' is improved 30% of sustainability performance and power efficiency compared to ’Cortex-A72.’

ARM presented that it is trying to build outstanding mobile environment under a partner policy, 'Leading Through Partnership,’ so it will provide the best experience by cooperating with various partners such as HiSilicon, Huawei, Marvel, MediaTek, Samsung and TSMC.
