  • Alternative payments are increasingly gaining prominence in Israel. In May 2021, Apple Pay was launched - enabling users to make contactless in-store, online, and in-app payments. Major banks such as Bank Hapoalim, Bank Leumi, Bank Massad, Discount Bank, ICC-Cal, Isracard, and Max support Apple Pay. Previously, First International Bank launched its mobile payment app FibiPay in February 2021, enabling its customers to make contactless payments using Android smartphones. Meanwhile, in July 2020, Isracard launched a mobile app called Anypay, allowing users to make contactless payments using their Android smartphones. And Google is planning to launch Google Pay in Israel towards the end of Q3 2021.
  • In order to reduce cash dependency in the country, the government approved the Law for the Reduction of Cash Use in March 2018, which limits the use of cash for both individuals and businesses. The law, which came into force from January 2019, restricted cash transactions to ILS11,000 ($3,422.30) involving businesses and ILS50,000 ($15,555.91) between individuals. The government reduced the limits to ILS6,000 ($1,866.71) for businesses and ILS15,000 ($4,666.77) for individuals from July 2020.
  • The launch of digital-only banks in the country is likely to accelerate the shift away from cash towards electronic payments. Launched in March 2021, First Digital Bank is a digital-only bank with no bricks-and-mortar presence, approved by the Bank of Israel in 2019. All bank operations are conducted online, including opening a new bank account. Services include personal accounts, joint accounts, loans, deposits, credit cards, and foreign currencies. Previously, Bank Leumi launched its new digital bank Pepper in Israel in June 2017. Pepper is a mobile-only bank offering online accounts.
