OpenStack foundation holds ‘OpenStack Summit Austin 2016’ from April 25 to 29 at Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas. In this event, recent OpenStack version ‘Mitaka’ and various cases of application related to OpenStack are introduced.

‘OpenStack Summit Austin 2016’ from April 25 to 29 at Austin Convention Center in Austin is an event where more than 7,500 participants from more than 55 countries are attending. In this global event, enterprise IT strategy, cloud application development, telecom ecosystem and NFV architecture aspects, and new projects and technologies in community are covered. Also, at developer’s working session, it will be discussing roadmap of ‘Newton,’ which is the next release on probably October 2016.

At the keynote speech in this year, innovation cases in various parts that uses OpenStack with a theme, which is OpenStack as an ‘integrated engine’ are highlighted. Especially, OpenStack provides effective environment when integrating the original enterprise application and cloud native application environment. In addition, AT&T’s integrated global cloud platform deployment case, SAP’s HANA platform and integration with OpenStack, or group public IT environment deployment of Volkswagen group are introduced as representative cases.

▲ Jonathan Bryce, OpenStack foundation Executive Director

▲ OpenStack’s role of mediating two different systems is magnified.

Jonathan Bryce firstly mentioned about OpenStack’s 13th version ‘Mitaka,’ which is recently introduced. OpenStack’s 13th version ‘Mitaka’ is developed by more focusing on the Manageability, Scalability and end user experience. Through it, OpenStack got the position as cloud platform that businesses and service suppliers can choose by connecting to cloud-native software development and business application optimization.

Donna Scott, vice-president at Gartner introduced about two working models that current business environment can choose at that site. One is safe, accurate and ‘predictable’ environment that has traditional composition. The other is an ‘experimental’ model composed of new ideas that can create new opportunities, and it has flexibility and speed as advantages. Also, she introduced that, according to currently more intensely competitive business environment, more money will be invested to digital business and it will be more important.

In rapidly changing digital business environment, these two models have completely different characteristics, and practically, there is a need to use both of them. In realization of effectively combining these two models, it is introduced that OpenStack provides environment, which can accommodate both original stable enterprise application and experimental cloud native application as one platform by maintaining each one’s advantages.

▲ OpenStack is at the position that can integrate and mediate systems with various characteristics.

As new technologies appear, variety aspect of IT environment composition is getting bigger, and it sometimes creates a problem that increases pressure about management. OpenStack introduced that it can be used in the way of standardizing and integrating the general platform in this part, and its application is extending to telecom/NFV related, of which application case is rapidly increased, university and research institute.

In addition, average half of 100 businesses are using OpenStack, and at the user survey for every six months, the result came out that 65% of OpenStack’s application case is adopted at production. This result is much more increased than the result announced at the last year or the last summit, and it is added that users are taking advantages through flexible framework that can support both of traditional workload and cloud-native workload, platform and API’s standardization.

Among three ‘key’ factors of OpenStack, the first one is ‘standard platform.’ OpenStack provides platform standardized in each layer from infra level and application level to cloud-native framework. Based on it, the second one emphasizes that it can all provide hosted system for the legacy app, cloud optimized system and cloud-native system, and it is the important point in situation when new apps need the legacy apps.

The third important ‘key’ is ‘culture’ part. It is more important factor than technology in some ways, and it is an important element that decides applicability of a new technology. In fact, if only integrating new technology and maintaining culture part of developing models, developing period is not really decreased. On top of that, the culture that can actively uses new technology should be integrated to maximize the technologies’ advantages such as completing an app in hours, etc.

▲ By integrating a system with completely different characteristic, AT&T’s AIC shows a new way of OpenStack application.

▲ AT&T, probably the largest contributor in Mitaka version, took this year’s superuser award.

Sorabh Saxena, senior vice president(SVP) at AT&T introduced about AT&T’s case. He pointed out service demand and increase of traffic as facing problems. Mobile traffic in 2015 is 114PB per day, and it is 150,000% increase compared to 2007. In 2020, he introduced that the traffic will increase ten times. Accordingly, service demand is largely increasing, and it is introduced that effectively responding to it is currently AT&T’s task.

Based on the standard hardware and OpenStack technology, AIC(AT&T Integrated Cloud) set its goal to increasing flexibility and effectiveness of management. It can compose cloud environment dispersed all over the world into a single-management environment, and accommodate both enterprise computing demand and network NFV workload in one cloud environment. For realization of this project, it is known that ten major components are used; Nova, Cinder, Swife, Neutron, Glance, Horizon, Fuel, etc.

In cloud environment dispersed all over the world, the biggest task is to deploy management environment that can integrate them, and AT&T introduced that it is effectively implemented by using OpenStack Resource Manager(ORM). Moreover, they deployed global controller ECOMP to integrate separated local NFV controller, and they made it possible to group by infra regions and features, quickly arrange and respond to various service demand through their technologies. AT&T got Superuser award of this summit through OpenStack application case of this large-scale cloud.

▲ The main cause of private clouds’ failure is mostly due to humans.

▲ SAP HANA cloud platform for IoT and industry 4.0 is based on OpenStack.

Boris Rensk, CMO at Mirantis introduced about the problems usually experienced in private clouds. In adoption of private clouds, the case of well adopting without any problem is only 5%, and 95% faces problems in any way. The biggest problem among them is ‘operating model switch failure,’ and it is because the difference between tendency of the actual operating team and that of operating team that users expect is big as much as the difference between ninja and bear.

In addition, ‘excessive complacent preparation’ is pointed out as a usual problem. The case that fits the problem is when, although OpenStack environment is prepared, the actual function and performance are not prepared as much as expectancy of the user who is used to the public environment. Besides, ‘too excessive preparation,’ or wrong use of technology that isn’t fit their actual demand is mentioned as significant problems. It is also emphasized that success of the actual adoption of OpenStack environment is applied more importantly to mostly humans and processes rather than technological factors.

Nayaki Nayyar, Global Head of IoT and Innovation GTM at SAP introduced about the use of SAP HANA platform, which is based on OpenStack, for IoT. For effectively responding to business’s trends such as digital transformation, IoT or industry 4.0, it is important to effectively carry over insights from data into the result of behavior. Additionally, as points required to the new solutions to it, standardized open platform, continuous development provide and possibility of rapid adoption are mentioned.

SAP introduced that HANA cloud platform for industry 4.0 is implemented into a form of micro service based on OpenStack and cloud foundry. The representative realization case of SAP HANA cloud platform is MindSphere of Siemens, and this platform used OpenStack as IaaS at infrastructure level. It implemented various services based on cloud foundry at PaaS layer as a form of micro service, and IoT platform is combined on that. The major related projects are Ironic, Manila, Monasca, Neutron and Kolla.

▲ Red Hat has been made a large contribution to application of the enterprise’s open-source.

Chris Wright, chief technologist at Red Hat introduced that application about production environment of OpenStack is rapidly increasing. According to the survey conducted to users, 65% of them are using OpenStack at the production level, and it is largely increased compared to that of two years before, which is 46%. Moreover, Red Hat’s OpenStack platform is securing various customers, and it emphasized that OpenStack is used in the actual working environment over the level of examining application.

The representative case of applying OpenStack based on Red Hat at the production level is FICO or Betfair. It is introduced that it makes management more efficient and obtains effectiveness such as cost reduction and time shortening until value creation. Verizon also started to adopt NFV environment based on OpenStack, and it added that it is growing its scale rapidly. In addition, it reduces the cost of automated and virtualized application based environment with a base of OpenStack, and satisfies various effects and requirements such as efficiency improvement.

Red Hat emphasized that it is actively contributing at applying community-based technology into enterprise environment. It also mentioned that OpenStack based environment may be able to be used even at the problem about diversity, which is inevitably occurred as a new technology is adopted. Although various projects and communities are gathered altogether in OpenStack, not only they are not simply gathered, but also it is the existence of unique position, which can include and standardize large ecosystem outside the project.

▲ Volkswagen group’s global IT service support is also deployed based on OpenStack.

Mario Mueller, Director of IT infra sector at Volkswagen group introduced about application case of its OpenStack-based environment. Currently, VM group has twelve brands and their supporting financial group, and a number of actions, such as development all over the world, are being made. In aspect of IT support, important requirements might be business support and standardization throughout the world, solution to problem in aspect of complicated management, business acceleration support, cost reduction, etc.

To satisfy these various requirements, Volkswagen introduced that it adopted OpenStack-based infra at the corporate level. OpenStack is adopted as global IT standard application platform in x86-based virtualization environment, and it is using cloud-ready applications such as the next generation website, car selection service, smart production analysis, 3D rendering, etc., as well as group IT cloud and hybrid cloud environment. This project, started from 2015, already completed realization of OpenStack IaaS, and the third step, OpenStack PaaS environment, is currently being implemented.

Volkswagen’s group IT datacenter composition is known to be 1,920 x86 cores, 56,800GB memory and about 33TB storage, 2015.12 estimated. It is introduced that it will be extended to 8,736 cores, 258,440GB memory and 2500TB storage until December 2017. Moreover, the service could be provided from OpenStack-based infra, as humans spend average 37,000 hours in cars, the center of a car is now moving from the engine to another factor, and new factors through cloud connectivity are emerging.
