OpenStack foundation holds ‘OpenStack Summit Austin 2016’ from April 25 to 29 at Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas. In this event, recent OpenStack version ‘Mitaka’ and various cases of application related to OpenStack are introduced.

‘OpenStack Summit Austin 2016’ from April 25 to 29 at Austin Convention Center in Austin is an event where more than 7,500 participants from more than 55 countries are attending. In this global event, enterprise IT strategy, cloud application development, telecom ecosystem and NFV architecture aspects, and new projects and technologies in community are covered. Also, at developer’s working session, it will be discussing roadmap of ‘Newton,’ which is the next release on probably October 2016.

At keynote speech on the second day, OpenStack’s theme as an ‘integrated engine’ and innovation cases from various parts using OpenStack are intensively highlighted. Especially, it emphasized not only how it becomes a role of a tow truck for public cloud service supplier and college/government research groups, but also the cooperation with complementary open-source technologies and communities, such as Kubernetes, Cloud Foundry and Apache Mesos.

▲ OpenStack foundation COO Mark Collier

OpenStack foundation COO Mark Collier announced that EasyStack and UnitedStack of China joined as new gold members. He introduced that 50 billion of devices are expected to connect to the internet until 2020 by IoT, etc., and infra demand, which supports these devices, is expected to increase explosively.

According to the result from the survey, in the future, 40 million new servers will extend for increasing service demand by IoT. Practical problem to this is ‘management,’ and OpenStack suggests a solution, which provides effectively integrated operation and management for large-scale bare metal, VM, container environment, etc. according to the application. However, realization of this integrated environment is impossible by OpenStack oneself, and there is a need to work with a number of projects, communities and businesses. And OpenStack keeps carrying on them.

The direction of open-source is decided upon ‘pattern’ of a user, and, according to the survey of OpenStack users, container, NFV/SDN, bear metal, etc. are mentioned as factors with users’ high interests and intentions. Also, the factors that showed high interests in aspect of container-based application management are Kubernetes, cloud foundry, openshift, etc. Many users use various projects by combining them. Accordingly, cooperation aspect became an important part to survival, and it is added that cooperation opportunities among communities are provided through many sessions.

▲ Tim Pletcher, engineering director at Time Warner Cable introduced their cases.

▲ The cases of tcp cloud are placed and implemented at the event hall without having to go far, so they are more realistic.

At Time Warner Cable’s cases, they implemented universal multi-tenant container management environment based on OpenStack and Apache method. An interesting point is the period spent for realizing it, and it was possible to get commercial operating environment for four to five months by starting from this year January with four engineers. Also, a module-based plug and play configuration influenced the progress characteristic of this project.

LivePerson introduced about the use of Kubernetes in OpenStack-based environment. It tried to switch the whole service from one large monolithic service to 150 micro services, and it mentioned that migration to container of micro service is the best choice for many reasons. Moreover, OpenStack-based cloud has an advantageous characteristic at integrating various recent technologies.

Implementation case of tcp cloud’s Smart City using OpenStack-based cloud is in the form of getting variety environment information through several sensors, passing through Raspberry Pi or x86 architecture based gateway, accessing internet, and processing in OpenStack-based cloud platform. Here, it has some characteristics such as integrating Kubernetes, driving micro service to a remote gateway, and connecting Docker and SDN by integration. Meanwhile, twenty sensors, twenty mesh routers, and three IoT gateways are needed at the Summit event hall.

▲ It is possible to get interesting characteristics when Kubernetes and OpenStack meet.

In aspect of OpenStack’s cooperation cases with other projects, Google, Kubernetes projects, and CoreOS are introduced. In case of Google, it has a characteristic of ‘cloud native computing’ that can be easily extended in infra for large-scale service. Its features are easily reproducing container packaged applications, raising operation efficiency by making dynamic scheduling possible, having a form of micro service, etc.

Meanwhile, a pod can own several containers in Kubernetes, and all of the network, hypervisor and control plain can be containerized as OpenStack environments are all applications. It is possible to quickly add components at OpenStack by deploying a pod and operate VM-ized coreOS based on OpenStack in variety environment. In this environment, although the process has a problem, it can secure high availability with self-healing function, and rolling upgrade can use by applying it.

▲ Lew Tucker, CTO at Cisco showed humanities presentation in a short time.

Lew Tucker, CTO at Cisco mentioned that the reason of humans able to control the Earth is because they can cooperate flexibly in large-scale. In addition, software has already moved the world. Open source is leading it, and producing cooperation that has never been seen so far. Representatively, ‘GitHub’ is changing the world by combining 35 million projects, 14 million users, internet and imagination, and cooperation.

It is explained that the period of a software-defined datacenter can implement a service that has never been seen by realizing much less price through immediacy and automation with composition and management of a datacenter with software, and by reducing dependency and the risk of investment through realizing with open source base. Moreover, Cisco has a clear reason for open source based business. That is, representatively, customers want a characteristic of modular architecture, their solutions provide flexibility and cost reduction, and it is taking a lead of standardization.

Cisco has been contributing to OpenStack since 2011, the early stage of OpenStack. It participated in open source SDN controller related ‘OpenDaylight,’ and it is progressing cooperation among businesses according to the markets’ and customers’ requirements. Also, in NFV part, a reference model of OPNFV is used at OpenStack and OpenDaylight, and open source VPP(Virtual Packet Processing) can maximize packet processing performance.

Meanwhile, a framework for micro service development makes development of a new application easy, and the new application of open source based cloud environment has an outcome that largely changes the world. OpenStack has a role of connecting them at the center of various technologies and projects, and it has established itself as a standard existence at on-premise or hybrid cloud realization.

▲ The next host of ‘Futurecity App Hackaton,’ which used OpenStack, is announced as Mexico.

Dean Troyer, PTL at OpenStack Client mentioned the aspect of OpenStack’s user experience. He introduced that openstack client currently combining all of compute, image, certification, volume and network area, and trying to implement environment of ‘Big Tent’ model through the same command-line interface experience by adding plugins to treating additional projects. For example, when HEAT client is installed, OCS recognizes and uses it by automatically integrating.

With OpenStack theme, the introduction of Futurecity App Hackaton, which had been hosted in Taiwan few weeks ago, is progressed. In this summit, Hackaton’s winning team went upstage. Demonstration of their project was equipping a sensor onto the guitar player’s arm, measuring movement during performance, collecting with OpenStack-based cloud, and analyzes big data. Meanwhile, realization to cloud-native application was pointed out as one of the characteristics. The next competition will be held in Mexico.

As the use of OpenStack in college or research institute, TACC(Texas Advanced Computing Center) is mentioned. TACC is operating two systems, which are largely different in their characteristics. In the realization of cloud based on these systems, OpenStack makes it possible to combine complicated environment with various elements for various uses.

▲ OVH extended vRack technology to the connection among data centers.

Imad SouSou, vice-president at Intel Open Source Technology Center firstly suggests ‘re-imaging’ of OpenStack, and, in this part, revealed that Intel had progressed new designs and applications at scheduling, etc. by listening to many users’ opinions. He also introduced that all the instances are equal, and introduced expandability of large-scale configuration, easy upgrade and distribution, and the importance of security aspect created from the design aspect. He showed the operation of ten thousand containers and five thousand VMs in a minute at the live demo.

In the aspect of public cloud, OVH’s case is introduced. OVH is currently operation 17 data centers, and it is going to deploy data centers in the US, Europe, Australia, etc. It is showing the trend of installing 500 new servers every day. Moreover, from the use swift for storage since 2012, it uses Nova for high performance compute instance in 2014, OpenStack for scaling in 2015, and it will be using for orchestration or L3+ networking in the future.

Although the original distribution model was north and south configuration, which is connected to compute node by passing network node, OVH makes it directly connected without network node by letting instance has public IP. It also implemented connections among data centers based on vRack technology in OpenStack environment, and here, it is added that bear metal sever or separated cloud service can have additional connection.
