OpenStack foundation holds ‘OpenStack Summit Austin 2016’ from April 25 to 29 at Austin Convention Center in Austin, Texas. In this event, recent OpenStack version ‘Mitaka’ and various cases of application related to OpenStack are introduced.

‘OpenStack Summit Austin 2016’ from April 25 to 29 at Austin Convention Center in Austin is an event where more than 7,500 participants from more than 55 countries are attending. In this global event, enterprise IT strategy, cloud application development, telecom ecosystem and NFV architecture aspects, and new projects and technologies in community are covered. Also, at developer’s working session, it will be discussing roadmap of ‘Newton,’ which is the next release on probably October 2016.

At media&analyst session of OpenStack summit, this summit’s major outcome, community, major index and outcome of the release, and the result of recent survey conducted on OpenStack users are introduced. The direction aspect and roadmap for the main project pursued in ‘Newton,’ the next version in this autumn after recently announced ‘Mitaka,’ and later versions are mentioned. The clearest purpose in direction of OpenStack’s next version is ‘management’ for integration.

▲ The most emphasizing message in the summit is the role as an ‘integrated engine.’

As the major outcome of this Austin summit, more than 7,500 registered participants from more than 60 countries attended, and the number of their affiliations reaches 1,190. 54% of the participants attended the OpenStack summit for the first time, and it can be interpreted that interests about OpenStack are on the rise. Besides, 116 sponsors attended, and the participations of large companies were standing out in design summit or other programs. It is also added that 4,000 seats were filled at hands-on workshop, training, etc.

A job category that occupies a big part among participants is cloud architect, and it takes about 17%. Also, 12% for OpenStack users, 11% for Upstream developers, and 10% for decision makers such as CEO/CIO/CTO/IT manager are outstanding. In this summit, it is introduced that a trend of user application presentation is divided into four things; enterprise private cloud, public cloud, telecom and NFV, and research and big data.

OpenStack foundation tries to continuously improve interoperability aspect for having the same experience of OpenStack at any environment and, as its extension, progress active cooperation with other communities and projects. Moreover, improvement of user experience is mentioned as an important direction as well as maturation of product management. Also an important direction, which was emphasized in this summit, is capability as an ‘integrated engine’ that can be handled in all of VM, container and bear metal.

▲ After Mitaka, the direction of release and foundation is emphasizing ecosystem extension and cooperation.

2,336 participants from 345 organizations contributed to OpenStack’s new version ‘Mitaka,’ and OpenStack’s global community currently has a scale of 50 thousand members from 178 countries. In aspect of contribution’s trend, contribution increased 15% compared to the last year, and 12% compared to the last version. In addition, in aspect of user scale for testing OpenStack, more than 5.5 million test jobs are running by 2015.

As a newly announced news, OpenStack foundation approved participations of UnitedStack and EasyStack as new gold members. It also announced an official version of the recent COA(Certified OpenStack Administrator) test that can demonstrate technology of the person in charge of cloud and help employers distinguish qualified appliers. The trainings and tests were progressed in this summit.

User experience, management, and expandability are pointed out as key themes of OpenStack’s recent version ‘Mitaka.’ Among them, in aspect of user experience, that OpenStack client allowed to manage various services with one tool, SDK support improvement, and newly introducing simplified Neutron API are mentioned. In aspect of management, the configuration of Nova and the installation of Keystone are simplified, and L3 and DVR support in Neutron are improved. In aspect of expandability, horizontal scaling in Heat, Keystone’s fernet token, etc. are mentioned.

As OpenStack’s important direction in the future, ‘integrated engine,’ which integrates various users and technologies as well as integration and cooperation with various technologies for user success, is pointed out. Moreover, with maturation to enterprise area and workload aspect, it announced that it would continuously strengthen NFV of telecom market. Besides, it mentioned that it would focus on strengthening public cloud momentum, concentration on user experience, and education for talent pool for cloud build as well as COA.

▲ The use of OpenStack inner project now entered setting period in some degree.

We can find an interesting point at the result of survey conducted on OpenStack users twice a year. Firstly, the number of respondent increased about 50% compared to the last year, and major figures of distribution number and multiple distribution number showed clear rise. Survey participation of app developers also largely increased compared to the last year. Meanwhile, the number of respondents participating both of two surveys among respondents during the recent one year reaches 473. It is added that survey targets were distributed in 538 cities, 76 countries around the world.

Among the sizes of the groups surveyed, although the size that occupied the most portion was the size of 1,000~9,999, the group with the size of more than a hundred thousand was about 16%, and the group size aspect generally showed equal distribution. Among respondents, more than 700 answered as ‘more than one’ for their roles. The most selected choice was cloud architect, and the next is cloud manager, system manager, upstream developer, or app developer, etc.

A noticeable point at the result of the recent survey was outstanding applicability aspect of the main project in OpenStack. ‘Nova’ shows 97% of availability with 66% of production and 31% of test. The projects, higher than 90% of combination of production and test, are Nova, Keystone, Glance, Neutron, Horizon, etc. At the same time, ‘container’ and related technology shows the highest interest, and container service ‘Magnum’ is the most selected choice for the interesting project.

▲ That the movement to the recent version is becoming fast is a positive sign.

▲ Now, escaping from laboratory, it is confirmed that OpenStack stepped into the world.

At using version distribution, although it is currently mainly featuring and it was ‘Kilo’ release a year ago, the importance of the last version ‘Liberty’ is fairly high, so the use of recent versions seems to be increasing. This is interpreted as being based on easiness aspect of the upgrade. Moreover, it is introduced that the number of projects used in OpenStack environment more increased than before, and now average 11 projects are being used. In many cases, more than 15 projects are used.

Among things users expect to OpenStack, the most commonly selected one is ‘standardization’ aspect, and it is interpreted that OpenStack’s API is now going up to actual standard position related to cloud. Of course, the ‘cost’ is most important part when considering, but there were many reactions of selecting OpenStack for flexibility and speed of application distribution or avoiding vender dependency.

The case of using OpenStack environment at the production level increased, and NPS score according to distribution environment has steadily increased for every version renewal period. The percentage of using OpenStack base as a production has increased until 65%, and the importance of using PoC, development or QA has decreased. Especially, with a large increase of the case using as a production level for the last one year, it seems that users, who examined PoC, decided adoption due to production or development environment.

▲ Over the next one year, ‘management’ is the most emphasized for two releases.

The roadmap of the next version considering the user survey results is shared in this briefing, but it is not a final, about 80% completed at the briefing. In a roadmap of the next version, Newton, the number of covered projects and team member somewhat increased, and a direction, goal, progression priority, etc. of the whole and independent project are controlled with expandability, availability, management, modularity, interoperability, etc. Moreover, management and interoperability are going to be intensely emphasized in ‘Newton’ than management and availability aspect are emphasized in ‘Mitaka’.

In 10,000fit view, the management aspect will be reinforced in all the projects of Newton. Apart from management part, expandability of ‘Heat’, ‘Cinder’, availability of ‘Kolla’, modularity of ‘Keystone’ and ‘Rally’, and interoperability of ‘Nova’ and ‘Telemetry’ would be intensely reinforced from this version and the next one year. Meanwhile, in aspect of management, a number of projects are going to be continuously strengthened, and this well reflects the direction of the future.

▲ The main plan of ‘Nova’ project is introduced.

▲ ‘Neutron,’ which recently receives lots of attention, is still rapidly changing.

At the independent project level, stability improvement, Neutron routed network part, progression of persistent efforts of scheduler and Cells v2 are pointed out as main tasks in the next version of a compute service ‘Nova.’ Moreover, ‘Keystone’ for certificate management and service catalogue tends to make an effort for enhanced security and policy, improved user experience, etc. It enables to support multi-factor certificate and to generate common policy scenario for all projects, and generation support for service catalogue of a new version is introduced as a typical goal.

In Newton release, ‘Horizon,’ which supports dashboard of OpenStack environment, is going to suggest user experience enhancement in aspect of performance and expandability, API coverage enhancement, searchlight integration, micro version API, etc. In addition, an image service ‘Glance’ is introduced with interoperability advancement through image transformation API, security control improvement with V2 API, advancement spec work for support hierarchical project, and improve general interoperability and manageability, etc.

In network part, ‘Neutron’ is introduced for nine blueprints in the next Newton release, and plan to support FWaaS API 2.0, multiple L3 backend, offering DHCP option in subnet, support VM without IP-address, and Keystone v3 support, etc. Moreover, a remarkable point in Newton release’s ‘Cinder’ is that it completes active-active Cinder volume support at Newton release. Besides, it is introduced that it will support Cinder to be used even at advanced error reporting, support to running in bear metal environment without Nova, etc.
