[TGS 2016] SIEJA Presentation Session – Nioh (仁王)

On September 15, in Makuhari Messe, Chiba ken, Japan, ‘Tokyo Game Show 2016’ was opened.

Celebrating the 20th anniversary this year, ‘Tokyo Game Show 2016,’ the show that represents Japan, is co-hosted by Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA) and Nikkei BP, and specially cooperated with DWANGO. The event is organized into a business-day on September 15 and 16, when only game business people and mass communication officials can enter, and a public-day on September 17 and 18, when all the visitors can enter.

At New Otani Hotel near the event hall, Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Asia (SIEJA) progressed a presentation session presenting a new title. In this session, it introduced about the main titles published by SIE affiliated developers and major publishers and explained the features of the games.

On the second day of event, ‘Nioh(literally ‘Benevolent King’, 仁王) session, which is an action game being developed by Team Ninja from Koei Tecmo Games, was prepared, and a director Fumihiko Yasuda was a presenter for the session.

‘Nioh’ is a game that used British William Adams, who rose to the position of Samurai while working as the Tokugawa shogunate’s diplomatic advisor in Japan, as a motif of the main character. It contains a story of blonde haired, blue eyed samurai defeating monsters during the Warring States period in 17th-century Japan, ravaged by the long war. The concept of the game is ‘Japanese style dark fantasy game that gives the feeling of taste and achievement by constantly fighting monsters and being killed.’

Since the stage of this game is the Warring States period in 17th-century Japan, many sites that might have been accessed through pictures or historical data are appeared in the game to raise realism, and enemies appeared in the game are also consisted of the monsters that are well-known through Japanese folktales. Famous armed soldiers during the Warring States period appear as enemies or allies, and if a user builds relationship with them, one will probably get equipment to enhance one’s play.

There are some differences in the playing time of the story mode depending on skills or difficulty, but it is usually 40 hours. As it is possible to upgrade the equipment and get items through various sub-missions, it is expected that users can enjoy longer playing time according to their playing style. About current development situation, Yasuda said, “According to the schedule, it is completed about 70%, but personally I think it is 50%.”

‘A game that is wanted to be cleared even if one breaks a controller’ is sought as a standard of level design, because motives to continuously challenge for feeling satisfaction have to be provided to the users, and the game should not be cleared easily, but that users keep dying is not wanted. However, becoming too easy unfits for the purpose of the game, so the build that anyone can easily clear is not permitted.

Moreover, by supporting online multiplay, users can create parties and challenge to difficult mission, which is hard to be cleared alone, and high class reward. The multiplay can be progressed freely depending on the user’s choice, such as playing the story mode together from beginning to end or playing only certain missions together. Items will appear separately for each user, so there will be no fighting over the items.

In case of the sound, which is one of the elements composing the game’s mood, as this game puts great importance on the action, when the enemy’s energy is consumed, energetic sound effect is applied at the moment of using deadly move. Sometimes these sound effects might be too excessive to be felt noisy, so, with receiving feedbacks, the adjustment of sound effects is working on. Composer Yugo Kanno, who created many animation and game songs, is in charge of the background music. It is introduced that, as the scenario of the game’s world view and its information are delivered when requesting a composition, it was possible to get a great music that shows the features of the game well.

Meanwhile, in case of graphic, a user can choose between ‘cinematic mode,’ which puts importance on resolution, and ‘action mode,’ which allows stable game play with 60-frame. So, if a user thinks better graphic is more important, ‘cinematic mode’ will be appropriate, and if the user thinks fast and accurate action is more important, the user can choose ‘action mode’ when playing the game.
