Google Korea held 'Google Special Forum: Internet and Security – Surviving Wild Web' at its office in Gangnam-gu, Seoul on the morning of the 13th.

The event was prepared to learn how to secure user information against a cataclysmic Internet environment and threats becoming more intelligent day by day, and Parisa Tabriz, Google Engineering Director, visited Korea to give a lecture.

First, Tabriz said that the biggest task of the Google security team is 'to protect users and their data safely’. They are considering various ways to make the Internet environment safer, and to allow users who use Chrome, which is Google’s web browser, to use the web in the safest way at the same time.

Users think that the Internet environment is safe, as they simply see that user device to directly connect to the target website. However, the environment is more complicated than the idea since the interconnecting point has to be passed through when accessing the website. In particular, it is emphasized that we need to recognize that each point could be manipulated by a third party as there are situations in the world that hackers try to steal account information for crimes. On top of that, the situations that Internet service providers and telecom companies collect customer data by revising their security policies in order to establish a monetization base are happening around the world.

In addition, Tabriz stated that many websites without using HTTPS can be a problem.
According to the data, Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) is a technical tool used by browsers to connect to websites. HTTPS is an encrypted HTTP connection that allows you to use HTTP more securely with SSL or TLS encryption. Most browsers have an icon that represents a secure connection. If there is HTTPS instead of HTTP in URL, the website connection is safe, and Chrome will display a green lock to make sure it's a secure website.

Google believes that strong encryption is the foundation for all users' safety and security on the Web, and it is making efforts to support encryption for all the products and services. It shows the current progress toward the goal through Google's HTTPS page.

▲ Google is trying to let Chrome users use the web safely and to make the Internet environment safer.

▲ The Internet environment is more complicated than it seems.

▲ HTTPS is an encrypted HTTP connection that allows users to use more safely.

▲ Google is actively promoting HTTPS, and the number of sites using HTTPS is increasing.

Lastly, as Chrome is a window into the Internet that is now used by more than 2 billion users, Tabriz asked users to take advantage of tips for the safe Internet use to protect themselves.

The first tip is to 'Use different passwords for each important account'. In case of information leakage while the same password for different sites has been used, the more accounts that use the same password, the more personal information will be stolen. Therefore, the most basic way of strengthening security is to set different passwords for important accounts through 'Password Manager' program provided by Google or other security companies.

The second tip is to 'Avoid signing in on a public computer and strengthening security settings'. The public computer at the airport or hotel business center does not know if malicious code or malware is installed. In addition, if you use a program that records all keystroke, the personal information of all the sites you visited can be passed on to hackers. Therefore, Google recommends users to use a variety of two-step authentication system to enhance their security settings by themselves.

The third tip is to 'Be careful about all the software or apps you install on your PC or smartphone'. Users should consider the safety of the software or app before installing it, as there are a lot of bad plugins that try to steal user's information. One way is using Google's 'Google Safe Browsing' function that allows users to search for sites that offer such software or apps to identify and warn unsafe websites.

The fourth tip is to 'Keep your browser up-to-date'. Older versions of the browser may be vulnerable to the latest security threats, so users should be prepared for the increasingly intelligent threat by installing the latest upgrade version provided by the browser's security team. Google has made it possible for users to conveniently keep their browsers up-to-date by automatically installing updates to their Chrome browser.

Tabriz said, "Google is committed to create a safe Internet environment as much as it considers user information security the most important." And, "The core DNA of all of Google's services is secure, and it runs a security team of top experts to establish the most robust, advanced secure infrastructure. We will provide more security elements to minimize the effort of users to protect themselves."
